IMATS Gets Its Dreamgirl

Francesca Tolot, who worked on 2006's critically-acclaimed hit movie Dreamgirls, will close out the International Make-up Artist Trade Show in London on Sunday, January 27.

Tolot will discuss her long and flourishing career, which has been showcased in music videos, fashion magazines and at the world’s top award shows.

She has created looks for Madonna, Elizabeth Taylor, Faith Hill, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Christina Aguilera.Tolot's work on Aguilera's "The Fighter" video, in fact, won her a Music Video Producer Awards nomination for Best Make-Up. Her work with Beyoncè over the years has also received global recognition, including the looks she created for the movie Dreamgirls.  Tolot also was the make-up artist for Kim Basinger on L.A. Confidential.

Paul Starr is unable to appear at London IMATS due to a family emergency.    

Speakers, educators set

The keynote speaker schedule has been finalized and the education classes are slated for the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show, which will be held January 26 and 27 in London.

Nick Dudman and Amanda Knight, who have worked together on the Harry Potter series of films, discuss their work jointly at 4 p.m. Saturday. Dudman is the 1997 winner of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award for his work on The Fifth Element; Knight has worked on Willow and Braveheart.

Six-time Oscar winner Rick Baker (How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Men in Black, The Nutty Professor, Ed Wood, Harry and the Hendersons, An American Werewolf in London) kicks off the show at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Baker is currently working on The Wolf Man, scheduled for release in 2009.

Paul Starr, who has been a make-up artist for more than 20 years, will close out the show Sunday at 3:15 p.m. Starr has worked for such clients as Charlize Theron, David Bowie, Prada and Armani, as well as for GQ and Rolling Stone magazines.

Education events scheduled for Saturday include demonstrations by Neil Gorton Studio, Charles Fox, Royal Brush, Terry Barber with M.A.C., Michael Benjamin with Temptu, Charles Porlier with the Vancouver Film School and Eve Pearl presented by Crown Brush.

Sunday educators include Jos Brands with Charles Fox, Tony Valdes with Elegance International, Guy Louis-XVI with Fuse FX, Brad Frikkers and Jason Reese with Smooth-On. John Schoonraad will apply a body cast in 20 minutes and Neille Young with M.A.C. will conduct a professional beauty workshop.

IMATS will be held at the Alexandra Palace in Wood Green, London. The six previous trade shows had been held at the Islington Business Design Centre.

New London IMATS location

Following six successful years at Islington’s Business Design Centre, the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show in London will now be housed at the Alexandra Palace in North London. The two-day show runs January 26 and 27, 2008.

Starr, Knight and Dudman sign on as IMATS speakers

Some of the biggest names in make-up artistry have been added as keynote speakers for the International Make-up Artist Trade Show, held in London in 2008. In addition to six-time Oscar winner Rick Baker, IMATS will feature Paul Starr, Amanda Knight and Nick Dudman.

Baker has been heralded for his work on the blockbusters How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Men in Black, The Nutty Professor, Ed Wood, Harry and the Hendersons and An American Werewolf in London. Starr, one of the world’s best-known celebrity make-up artists, has worked with a broad range of musicians and actors, including David Bowie and Salma Hayek; companies including Armani and Prada; and publications including Vogue and Rolling Stone. Knight has done Willow, Braveheart and all of the Harry Potter movies. Dudman, who will be speaking with Knight, also worked on Harry Potter, on the team that created the make-up effects and magical animatronic creatures. He has also done The Mummy Returns, The Hunger,The Fifth Element, Batman, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Interview with a Vampire. All of the speakers have won multiple honors, including Saturn and British Academy of Film and Television awards.

The success and growth of IMATs U.K. necessitated a move to the larger Alexandra Palace.
Advance tickets, available until Dec. 17, are £33 a day or £55 for both days, £28 a day or £48 for both days with a valid student ID, and £10 a day or £20 for both days for children 5 to 10 years old. Children under 5 can attend for free. From Dec. 18 through Jan. 17, a one-day ticket is ₤38 and a two-day ticket runs ₤60, with a student pass costing ₤33 for one day and ₤53 for both days. Tickets at the door sell for ₤45 for one day and ₤65 for both days, and student tickets cost ₤38 for one day and ₤58 for two days.

Tickets are available online at www.makeupartistshow.net/. Tickets are non-refundable and advance ticket sales end promptly on Jan. 17. After Jan. 17, all tickets must be purchased at the door. Pre-ordered tickets will be available for pickup at will call the day of the shows. Vendor spaces are filling quickly, so companies are advised to secure a booth before it’s too late!
